Hotel Review: Royal Plaza On Scotts
Superior Room High Tea Buffet @Carousel You may have probably heard about Royal Plaza for its famous buffet restaurant- Carousel, Many bloggers have listed them as one of the "Must-Go" buffet places in Singapore. As a self-proclaimed gourmet, I think they are bullshitting, especially if they put them in the list again in 2015. Royal Plaza On Scotts is one of the luxury hotel collection of Summit Hotels & Resorts. While their main lobby may appears to be "grand-morous", their rooms, amenities and facilities are more towards practicability instead of luxurious. With their exceptional food and communication, my experience with them was unforgettably a bad one. Click on to read my review on Royal Plaza and Carousel.
Superior Room (Basic Category Room)
Average price: S$350++ Room Size: 32 Sqm
Before I share my unpleasant story at Royal Plaza, I shall be fair by starting off with the things I like about their room.
Considering its prime location at Orchard, their superior room provides a generous amount of space for 2. The colours in the room are mostly from the same palette of earth browns. At the corner of the room, there is a chic lounging chair which I love about. It is a tasteful choice that brings a beautiful contrast, keeping up the room with the present.
For a good night rest, the hotel provides 3 different choices of pillow. Those on the king sized bed were fiber filled pillows and feather pillows. Personally, I found them too stiff and high, The third choice was the firm latex foam pillows which I had to request over the phone. Surprisingly, the firm latex pillows were rather soft. I thought it will be stiff since the word "firm" suggested it.
One thing worth mentioning about Royal Plaza is that they provide a Nespresso machine and complimentary mini bar in all room categories. Although the choices in the mini bar (a.k.a the fridge in this hotel) may look limited, the hotel is actually being very generous to provide them for free. Besides the chilled drinks and creamer, there were Oreo, oatmeal cookies and Kit-Kat, which will replenished twice a day during the daily housekeeping and evening turndown service.
And lastly, the toilet in the room comes with a separate rainshower stall and is equipped with in-house brand shower amenities. There is nothing really special or luxurious about the toilet. Bathtub and L'occitane shower amenities are only available in premier room and suites.
Hotel Facilities:
So now the interesting part comes. What was I frustrated about? Getting this picture done and to enjoy this champagne that my friend brought along were not as easy as I expected.
This was what happened:
1) Before we left the room in the late morning, I left a note beside the champagne bottle, requesting for 2 champagne flute and a bucket of ice . When we returned in the late afternoon, we had the champagne in the ice bucket, but with 1 flute and 2 red wine glasses. Since it was a nice champagne, I wanted to use the proper champagne flute to maintain the bubbles. 2) I called in this time to request for another flute just before we left for dinner. When we returned after the dinner, we realized there were an additional of 2 dessert wine glasses ( 1 flute on the table still). Hence, I made the second call, emphasizing CHAMPAGNE GLASS. 3) Few minutes later, we were given a champagne glass, but the size and shape was different from the first one we were given during the day. I was wanting to do a perfect picture, so I actually called in again to ask for a pair of champagne glass ( I know I am little crazy, but this is an expensive bottle.) 4) After hanging up the phone, I realized I have forgotten to request for ice since half of it had melted. So I made the third call and reminded them about my previous request. 5) Moments later, we finally received what we wanted, a bucket of ice and a pair of champagne flute. And moments later again, someone ring the bell and gave us another pair of champagne flute again. 6) To summaries, we amazingly ended up with 10 glasses in the room, after much waiting and calling.
Carousel- High Tea Buffet
Before we went for their high tea buffet at Carousel, I made a call to find out what they were offering. We were actually craving for some warm scone, good cakes and canapes at that time. Over the line, I was told that it was a mixture of English and Local cuisine. When I heard that, I had a strange feeling about it. However, since Royal Plaza is renown for its buffet at Carousel and they were so many people in the queue, we decided to give it a shot.
So when we entered the restaurant, we first saw the 2 dessert bar at the side with fondue and small cakes. (Good, now where is my hot scones and some delicious canapes)
Then as we moved forward, there was a Indian food counter and a Japanese bar on the left, displaying some Sushi, Sashimi and Shabu Shabu.
On the right, it was the crustacean on ice and some finger sandwiches on the side. I was quite shaken at that moment. (The sandwiches were totally unappealing.)
Towards the end of the restaurant were the fried and hot items, ranging from Chinese cuisine like Dim Sum, Laksa and Chicken Rice to Malay cuisine like Nasi Lemak. (Oh no! No scones and canapes. Crap!)
As we settled down, I was just hoping that everything will taste good, since they do not have the thing I wished for. But seriously, weren't all these items more for lunch instead of afternoon high tea? The only English food in the buffet were probably the cakes, fondue, sandwiches and that waffle which looked almost burnt.
To be honest, everything was too heavy for an afternoon tea, especially those fried and spicy items. The only thing I liked about were those from the Japanese section and the sliced roasted chicken from the live kitchen. There was absolutely nothing I like from the dessert bar. The ice cream was cheap tasting, the cakes were just normal, and the fondue were just too sweet. A decent Eclair puff should at least be creamy inside. When I teared it into half, the cream was firm.
The worst thing from the buffet was their drink. They were serving Lipton Tea, syrup water and the drinks from the coffee machine. Wasn't it supposed to be an afternoon high tea buffet? They should at least serve better tea brand. For a cheaper price at Goodwood Park Hotel, which is just across the street, I could have 2 selection of premium TWG tea, Movenpick Ice cream, better tasting cakes and Foie Gras!

Bottomline
Royal Plaza on Scotts is not a bad choice for staying if you managed to get a good discounted rate. Even though the communication within the service team was not ideal, the room is definitely comfortable to laze in for the whole day. Additionally, all room categories come with complimentary minibar and Nespresso coffee machine. If you like to have the lounge access, the rate for each room is S$90++ per day. The following are the Royal Club lounge benefit: 1) Complimentary Breakfast, Afternoon Tea and Evening Cocktail 2) Complimentary pressing for one suit per stay 3) Complimentary usage of club boardroom for 1 hr daily. Last but not least, I will strongly not recommend anyone to try their high tea buffet at Carousel. The food is terrible. I shall warn you about the food at the Royal Club Lounge. Since the food at their high tea buffet was bad, I do not think the food at their lounge is good as well.

Apparently, nothing in this materialistic world is enough for your highness. Get off your high f*kin' horse and quit whining so much about the "mediocre" service you got. By the way, that champagne is absolute trash, peasants calling Taittinger expensive lmao.
