Hotel Review: Waldorf Astoria Berlin (Hilton Group)
King Deluxe Room With View "I can pour Moët in the cup for a take-away if you want." On our last day when we were about to leave Waldorf Astoria Berlin, we requested to redeem a cup of coffee each for our complimentary welcome drink . Most of the time when we had such entitlement at other hotels, the selections were limited to some boring juices and drinks. It was to our big surprise to know that we could choose anything. Can you imagine we almost had a coffee instead of a glass of Moët & Chandon, fresh from a new bottle?! When I was planning my Berlin trip, my friend was constantly saying that we have to book Waldorf Astoria. I was deciding between the Ritz Carlton and Waldorf Astoria since hotels in Berlin are relatively cheap, almost similar to the rates in Bangkok. I am so glad that I had listened to his advise. I was so mind-blown with literately everything about Waldorf Astoria.
Upon our first arrival at the lobby, I am already deeply by the service and ambiance. The hotel was really classy to the extent that I was more mindful of my body gesture and the way I speak.
There was no noise in the lobby, except the light music played live by the pianist. If you have watched Fifty Shades, did you remember the receptionist at the Grey Enterprise? The attendants at Waldorf Astoria were almost like them, less the arrogance. They all looked well-groomed and posh in their grey business wear. They were soft in their tone, but yet well articulated. Most importantly, they were very well mannered and service oriented. The service culture at Waldorf Astoria was truly that impressive. I know you may be thinking that I am exaggerating. Unfortunately, I did not have photos to prove my words. You just got to visit Waldorf Astoria if you happen to be in Berlin, or probably read up on Trip Adviser.
King Deluxe Room With View
As my friend is a Hilton gold member, we were given a complimentary room upgrade to the King Deluxe room with view. The hotel had also specially left a birthday cake and some handwritten messages since it was my friend's birthday.
Pardon me if I have been using too much "seriously" in my blog. But seriously, the room was filled with surprises!
First of all, as the the name of the room suggests, the room has an excellent view over the main shopping district; and most importantly, facing the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. It was so wonderful to laze in the bed, wrapped myself around with the silky smooth blanket and just gazed at the big scenery in front, especially at night when the church glows beautifully. From the side of the bed, there is another elongated window where we could also overlook the zoological garden and the enormous city park of Berlin.
For convenience, the main controls are located at the side of the bed, including the curtains control. There were also complimentary bottled water and a coffee machine, which brought great ease for us since we chose to spend more time in this hotel than doing sight-seeing on our last few days. To provide a good night rest, we were provided with 7 different options of pillow and one of which was a horsehair pillow!
Besides the horsehair pillow, the technologies in the room are fascinating as well. The "main" TV in the room is 40 inch large and comes with Apple TV technology, which enabled us to surf the internet on the movable large screen, using a wireless keyboard. ("Main" ?)
(Yes, "Main". There is another TV somewhere else!)
The King Deluxe room in Waldorf Astoria Berlin is 42-45 sqm big. More than a third of the space is occupied by the marble bathroom, which comes with separate shower. If you think that the built-in mirror TV is ridiculous enough, I think that under floor heating and the shower and cosmetic amenities are more ridiculous.
While Singapore Airlines' offers Salvatore Ferragamo amenities only to their First Class, Waldorf Astoria offers a more extensive range of Salvatore Ferragamo products to all guest in all room categories. Some of which includes separate bath and facial soup, shower caps and shoe mitt.
Facilities at Waldorf Astoria Berlin
Since Germany is freezing (to Asians) almost all year round, the main pool and other facilities are all built indoor. This was something new to me since it is rare to have indoor pool in hotels at Southeast Asia. The indoor pool at Waldorf Astoria Berlin was almost like a sanctuary to us. To my surprise, there were hardly any people around. We easily spent hours over there, just going around into the hot whirlpool, the steam, the sauna and the main pool.
When we had enough of the water, there were also other places to laze in. One on which was the hotel's library lounge on the 15th floor where we could pick some book, enjoy the panoramic view or even stargazing at night. However, all food and drinks in the library come with a price tag.
Bottomline
Waldorf Astoria can be considered as the most luxurious hotel chain in Hilton Group. Since there are only a few Waldorf Astoria properties worldwide, it gives you another reason why you should book your stay with Waldorf Astoria, especially in Berlin where the hotel rates are generally more affordable. The room we had was totally exceeding my expectation. What I love the most were definitely the generosity of hotel, the luxurious details and also the impeccable service culture. The staff at Waldorf Astoria Berlin were very self-initiative and service oriented. We met the lady who did our check-in a couple of times during our stay. She never fails to acknowledge our presence and always try to strike a short conversation with us. When we asked for directions within the hotel, she would also bring us there personally. Additionally, the concierge has also left a good impression. I noticed that they would come forward and greet us whenever we were in-sight. They also provided us with many good suggestions and offered us bottled water before we embarked for our sight-seeing. The best suggestion we had received during our stay is definitely has to be the one from Romanisches Cafe when the staff suggested Moët instead of coffee for our complimentary welcome drink!
