The Courtyard, Fullerton Hotel
Traditional English Afternoon Tea Buffet Review To be honest, I am a little obsessed with tea stand set lately, all thanks to my great discovery at 10 Scotts, Grand Hyatt Singapore. As "Im Feeling 22" just last week, my friend had invited me for an afternoon tea session either at St. Regis or Shangri-la. However, I decided to pick Fullerton Hotel mainly because of my little obsession and price consideration. If you were to ask me whether it was a right choice, my answer is ...
Not really.
For SGD43++ /pax, the traditional English afternoon tea at Fullerton Hotel offers a 3 tiered tea stand, 2 types of scones and 2 choices of TWG tea or coffee. All items are fully replenish-able. Most of it were tasting good but unfortunately not remarkable. The only thing I am impressed with this buffet was their service concept. The staff were making their rounds all the time to replenish the items. This service is really thoughtful for lazy people like me during a late and scotching hot afternoon. This entitled them a good reason for that 10% service charge, unlike some restaurants like Sushi Express -Do they even provide service? Back to Fullerton Hotel, we were first served with the drink and hot scones (plain and raisins), complemented with clotted cream and strawberry jam. Their scone is one of my favorite thing from the buffet. They are a little moist with a smooth texture, unlike many others which are usually dry and flaky.
Shortly after we finished the second scones, we were presented with the highlight of the day.
The dainty savory items were as follows:
1) Smoked Salmon Mille Feuille with Averuga Caviar 2) Curry Egg Sandwich on Broiche Roll 3) Otak Sandwich with Quail Egg with Walnut Bread 4) Brie Cheese, Plum Jelly, Pistachio with Hazelnut Cracker 5) Smoked Duck with Spicy Mango Salsa 6) Mini Bagel, Prosciutto Ham with Cheddar Cheese 7) Classic Cucumber and Salmon Roe
My most favorite would be the Smoked Salmon Mille Feuille with Averuga Cavier, even though they could have put a little more Caviar. The most interesting one would be the plum jelly and Brie cheese, which created a burst of flavor in the mouth. The local flavors were special too, but I was expecting a real traditional English afternoon tea, like what it was stated.
The dessert on the first tier were as follows:
1) English Fruit Cake 2) Raspberry Financier 3) Chocolate Eclair 4) Red Velvet Cup Cake 5) Vanilla Creme Brulee
After all the savory items, I found that the pastries on the first tier were rather dry for me. The taste and texture were not outstanding as well. However, their Vanilla Creme Brulee was really good. It was even better than the one from L'espresso. The sugar crust had a rich caramelized flavor and the bottom layer was really creamy and smooth.
The last tier items were as follows:
1) Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart 2) Lemon Tart 3) Macaroons 4) Kueh Lapis
Frankly speaking, they were just alright for me. The chocolate tart at Grand Hyatt was much runny and richer. The cream between the Macaroon should be firmer. The only surprising stuff was the lemon tart. The cream had a sharp and tangy flavor, which was really unique. Unfortunately, the lemon tart is not really my type of dessert.
Drinks Menu:
Bottomline
Given the amount of food choices, SGD43++ /pax is rather overprice. Most items were tasting good but not remarkable. The service staff were readily available to replenish the items. One of them were very attentive and proactive. He went further to ensure that our cups were fully filled most of the time. However, there was one senior staff who was rather arrogant and did not observe some table manners.
