Flight Review: Singapore Airlines First Class Product
SQ327 Munich To Singapore Boeing 777-300ER (77W) What is the feeling of being in Singapore Airlines First Class? You get the largest seat and screen, maximum privacy and the endless Krug and Dom Perignon. It is an exclusive feeling to be in first class and at the first priority. It is as though you are flying on a private jet, with just 8 seats in a cabin served by 3 cabin crew.
Flight Details
SQ327 MUC - SIN Dep: MUC 1325 Arr: SIN 0710 Total Duration: 11hr 45mins Seat: 2A (First Class-Earlier Generation) Configuration: 1-2-1 Upon Boarding On this particular flight, I was fortunately enough to be upgraded to first class. When I reached the aircraft, I was warmly greeted by the leading steward and In-flight service manager at the door and I was escorted by one of them to 2A. In the first class, although its a small cabin, it actually feels extremely spacious as everything were over-sized and there were no overhead compartment. Luggage can be either stored under the ottoman or the storage area at the front of the cabin. Once I settled down in my seat, the leading steward introduced himself and offered me a pre-departure drink. As I am always crazy for champagne, I ordered the Dom Perignon. Not long after, the crew returned and showed me the bottle before pouring a glass of bubbly for me.
Before leaving me alone, he presented the first class menu and gave me a brief on the service for the flight. While waiting for push-back, I had a quick glance through on the menu and it got me really excited for the meal service. They have an extensive choice, particularly for their beverage selections, where they offer renowned champagnes and wines, multiple unique cocktail creations, Illy coffee and TWG tea.
Beverage Menu: Exploring The First Class Seat
As Singapore Airlines recently launch their new seat product for all classes, this version of First Class seat product belongs to the earlier generation. This first class seat product feature a 35 inches wide leather seat, fitted in 1-2-1 configuration, providing direct aisle access and great flexibility to position myself comfortably. At the front, the seat is fitted with a large 23 inches high resolution screen, along with vanity mirrors on both sides of the screen.
Similar to their business class seat, the seat has a dedicated sleeping surface. During the turndown service, the crew will flip the seat-back down to transform the seat into a fully flat bed. For an angled-recline, the seat control is located at the side. After The Take-Off
Soon after when the seat-belt sign was turned off, the leading steward came with the drink that I requested on ground earlier on, along with some warm nuts and a steamy towel for a quick refresh. When I was looking through the beverage menu, I noticed that they had two new creations for SG50 and I decided to give it a try.
I could not resist the Sweet Nostalgia . It was the bomb! It was really creamy and chocolaty. It was as though like drinking a very rich and cold melted ice-cream.
Before the crew went behind the curtain, the leading steward took my lunch order. He also offered me the amenities which includes the Salvatore Ferragamo amenity kits, pajamas, slippers, socks and eye shade.
There were more amenities in the lavatory as well. It was good to have the toothbrush and other toiletries separated from the Salvatore Ferragamo amenity bag as I do not have to return to my seat if I have forgotten those items.
First Class Lunch Service For Suite/First, Business and Premium Economy class passengers, there is an alternative to the listed choices. The Book-the-Cook service enables passengers to pre-order a meal (exclusively created by SQ international culinary panel) at least 24hrs before the flight. Lunch Menu:
While waiting for the meal to be heated up in the galley, the lunch service started off with the Canape.
Canape- Singapore Chicken and Mutton Satay
After clearing the plate, the crew did a complete set up of my dining table. Then, one of them presented a basket full of assorted rolls and bread. If you get a chance to fly with them on the business/first class, do try their garlic bread. They have one of the best garlic bread in the sky. Subsequently, the second crew presented the appetizer. As I was being upgraded to First class, I wasn't able to choose the Cavier as they were limited. :/ Hence, I had to opt for the alternative.
Appetizer- Seared Scampi with Dill, Fennel Salad and Orange
From The Bakery- Pretzel and Garlic Bread
Soup- Basmati Rice Cream Soup with Prawn, Rice Crispy and Anchovy-Pesto Sauce
Salad- With Olives, Dried Cherry & Shaved Parmesan Cheese With Choice of Balsamic Vinegar & Extra Virgin Olive Oil Dressing or Honey Mustard Dressing
Main Course- Seared Beef Fillet Cacciatore (Comes with Rustic Tomato Sauce, Porcini Mushroom, Broccoli and Potatoes)
Dessert- Giandula Chocolate Cream with Sable Crumbs (Comes with Vanilla Ice Cream and Rose Jelly)
Cheese Platter- Goat Camembert, Bergader, Bavarian Hard, Rahmberg Mobier Cheeses with Grapes, Nut and Crackers
Towards the end, I was offered some hot beverage and Pralines. The whole meal service lasted for more than an hour. I was really pleased with whole experience as I felt that the service provided by the crew were genuine. They were really attentive and they occasionally engaged some conversations with the passengers as they served the drinks and dishes.
Turndown Service
Before I slowly entered into food-coma after the sumptuous meal, I decided to request for the turndown service so that I could lounge in the bed while catching some movie. For First Class, Singapore Airlines offered a Bose acoustic noise cancelling headphones, which completed shut out the noise from the cabin.
As the flight was flying towards the night sky, I was half awake and asleep while the movie was playing. It was probably when the plane was approaching somewhere near the middle east that I decided to get up and take a look at the menu.
Onboard Snacks & Small Meals
BeeHoon Noodles
I wonder if it is my problem or a #firstworldproblem that I tend to eat something when I had nothing much to do. Even though I wasn't hungry, I actually ordered BeeHoon Noodles. There were other small snacks to choose as well.
Breakfast Service
After the small meal, I actually went into deep sleep for hours until it was about time for breakfast. I actually requested the cabin crew to wake me up for breakfast before I went to sleep. With the soft and smooth duvet and blanket, it was not difficult for me to get a good sleep. Breakfast Menu:
Fruit Platter and Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice
Appertiser- Bircher Muesli
Main Course- Scrambled Eggs With Vine Ripened Tomato, Mushroom, grilled bacon and potato cheesecake.
In First Class, the eggs are actually freshly made onboard. Hence, passengers may decide how their eggs are to be done. Along with the main course, there were also a selection of assorted bread and breakfast pastries to choose from. Landing into Singapore Not long after the crew wrapped up the breakfast service, the pilot made his arrival announcement and the crew started to prepare for final approach. Although it was a 12 hours flight, I was totally energized. It was kind of surreal that everything ended so fast. While in the economy class, we can't wait for the flight to end soon. In the first class, I was actually hoping that the flight time was longer.
Bottomline
While the Singapore Airlines First Class and Business Class may look somewhat similar, the hard and soft products were more detail oriented. The service was more personal and the crew were readily available to attend my needs. The food and drink selection were definitely finer and more exclusive as compared to business class. As I mentioned earlier, Singapore Airlines is currently refitting all their Boeing 777-300ER with their new seat product across the cabins. Eventually, this seat product will not be available on B773 ER. However, there are no news about refitting the Boeing 777-300 aircraft. Hence, I believe this version of first class will still be available for the next few years, particularly on their short-mid haul flights. The B777-300 aircraft can be seen on Jakarta and Tokyo route. In the spirit of full disclosure, this blog entry is contributed by Den.
