Flight Review: Singapore Airlines New Long Haul Economy Class
SQ327 MUC-SIN Boeing 777-300ER Singapore Airlines has recently introduced their new seat products for all cabin classes. If you wish to fly more comfortably in the economy class, you got to be tactical when you are picking your flight since different modesl have different types of seat product. For Singapore Airlines, their new seat products are progressively introduced to their Boeing 777-300ER (which typically operate on long haul flights). Their new Airbus A350 fleet will carry the latest seat product as well. In this post, I will give you a rough idea on how is it like flying on a long haul flight with SQ new economy class. Additionally, if you are interested to try out their new economy class, do check out the last section in this post as I will be teaching you how to pick a flight that carry this new seat product.
Flight Details
SQ327 Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport - Singapore Changi Airport Dep: MUC 13:00 Arr: SIN 07:40 (+1) Total Duration: 11Hrs 40Mins Aircraft type: Boeing 777-300ER Seat: 49k (Emergency Exit,Economy Class aft cabin)
The Seat
All SQ Boeing 777 series aircraft and their new Airbus A350 XWB adopt a 3-3-3 seat configuration in the Economy Class. Some airlines are less generous by adopting the 3-4-3 seat configuration. To name a few, they are Air France and KLM.
This seat design belongs to the latest series. It can be found on Singapore Airlines' Airbus A350 and most of their Boeing 777-300ER, which are usually used to operate on long haul flights. The seat I had chosen was 49K, which is the emergency row. Here comes the important part. Seats along the emergency exits (emex) and bulkhead (wall/partition) have the best leg room. However, these seats are usually blocked until check-in opens. Some seats are also sold at additional price. Bulkhead seat: The whole seats on row 41 and seat 49 DEG are bulkhead seats. They are free of charge and occasionally come with free crying babies. If you wish to take this row, remember to check-in early as they will only be released by then. Emergency exit row: Although row 49 is the emergency exit row, only seat 49 BCHJ are chargeable or reserved for elite Krisflyer members. Same as the bulkhead seats, they are only released when check-in opens. It is worth noting that there is a missing window in this row and seat 49 AK have slightly less leg-room due to the door in front. However, there is nothing much to be worry about as seat 49AK have significantly more leg room than the majority of the seats.
After The Take-off
When I got on the plane, all the amenities, which include the amenity kit and the earpiece, were already placed on the seat. As I was seated on the emex row, I could only use the entertainment system after take-off. Soon after the take-off, the crew went to prepare for the pre-meal service. In the meantime, I drew out the screen and started exploring the entertainment system. Although it does not work as smooth as an iPad, it is still a huge improvement. The entertainment system is more interactive and user-friendly. For instance, I could move the map around easily with my fingers. It pretty much function almost like an iPad and the screen is larger as well. In addition, the remote control has its own screen as well. You can have your movie on the main screen while having the map on your remote control.
For a small indulge, they started off with a drink service and I requested for the Singapore Sling. Unlike many other airlines, SQ economy class passengers are offered with an extensive range of drinks. To list out a few in the list, they have multiple flavored tea, cocktails, mocktails and liqueurs like Baileys. They also provide hot towels for every passenger as well.
While I was waiting for the meal service, I decided to pick a movie to watch. I really love the selections they had because there were many very recent movies. For instance, The Danish Girl was on Singapore's cinema in Jan/Feb and they already have it on board this month. Very impressive!
Meal Service- Lunch
Economy Class: Lunch and Beverage Menu
I guess one the the perks for flying Singapore Airlines is that they offer an extensive range of beverage and meal choices. Out of the 3 choices, I opted for the "Braised Beef Roulade in Mustard Sauce" with "Roasted Chicken with Potato Chive Salad" as the appetizer. Although the greens were overdone, the meal was quite delicious in general. Most importantly, the beef was not tough. After the main meal was served, the crew made a few more rounds to offer some drinks and Magnum Ice-cream.
Throughout The Flight
After a few hours into the flight, the sky turned completely dark. I spent most of the remaining hours either sleeping or catching a movie. Oh well, this is pretty much one could do on a flight. Therefore, I always appreciate a good in-flight entertainment system with a spectrum of interesting selections. This is an area that I think SQ has done well so far.
Another thing I love is that their menu is very informative. Most airlines do not even provide a menu. But if they do, they only list out a few main items. For SQ, if you fancy for some small bites at any point of time, you can either check out the choices on the menu or have a visit at the galley where they lay out a small mini snack bar. Throughout the flight, the crew made several rounds in the cabin to offer drinks and snacks as well.
As for the amenities in the lavatory, things were kept pretty simple. Personally, I prefer to have the dental kit in the lavatory rather than in personal amenity kit. When I am aware (or assume) that there is no one queuing for the lavatory, I would take the opportunity to do some dental cleaning. For SQ, the dental set are provided in both the amenity kit and the lavatory.
Meal Service - Breakfast
About 2 hours before landing, the cabin crew commenced with the breakfast service. This time round, there were two choices and I opted for the "Braised Beehoon". This dish was actually tastier than the one I had for lunch earlier on. On the previous flight from Munich, they even had poached eggs as well.
Shortly after the meal service, the crew prepared the cabin for landing. The next time when you are flying to Singapore, do choose the left side of the seat. If the plane is flying in from the west, you could see the seaport and the Singapore's CBD as well.
Choosing A Flight With This New Economy Class Seat Product
When any airlines roll out a new seat product, be it for their business class or economy class, they will usually introduce them on the aircraft model that are typically used to operate on long haul flights. If you are interested to try out SQ new economy class seat product, it can be found on most Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and all their Airbus A350 aircraft.
To confirm the aircraft that you will be flying on has the new economy class seat product, there is one easy way you can do it. When you are booking the flight, take note of these two things: 1) Identify the aircraft type for the flight. Choose either AIrbus A350 or Boeing 777-300ER. 2) If the aircraft type is Boeing 777-300ER, confirm that there is Premium Economy Class.
Do note that although the Airbus A380 has premium economy class, the aircraft is still fitted with the previous version of seat product for economy class. Click here to find out how the previous version of long haul economy class seat product looks like.

Aaww... shucks! I just booked a flight from HK to SFO for July. I have a Singapore 777-300ER plane. I was hoping to get this new cabin... but you said that if there's no Premium Economy, then it doesn't have the new cabin. T_T

SQ1 and SQ2 are regularly served by next-generation planes with new seats and no PEY. Same goes with SQ318/319 (LHR). I have flown SQ319/SQ2 a few times now and without fail, the next-gen products have come out.

There may be a possibility. However, if u r flying on B777-300ER, certain refitted aircrafts do not come with Premium economy. And I'm pretty sure that you will get the new seat product to london when u fly on B773. During booking, if the website did not allow you to purchase the extra legroom seat, u should call in to reservation and not wait under when you are checking in your flight at the airport.
