Flight Review: Singapore Airlines, Long Haul Economy Class
SQ327 MUC-SIN (Boeing 777-300ER) Long haul flights can be intimidating and tiresome, but not on the one with Singapore Airlines. I am not being a bootlicker here, trying to flatter our national carrier. If you have flown with other airlines, especially with those from the west, you would know the differences and understand why I said so. Now let's find out what makes Singapore Airlines a little more special than others.
*Singapore Airlines is progressively refitting their Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with the new seat product. Click here for the new flight review on their new long haul economy class seat product (SQ327 MUC-SIN).*
Flight Details
SQ327 Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport - Singapore Changi Aiport Dep: MUC 13:25 Arr: SIN 07:10 (+1) Total Duration: 11Hrs 45Mins Aircraft type: Boeing 777-300ER Seat: 31A (First row on Economy Class)
The Seat
All SQ Boeing 777 series aircraft, including this Boeing 777-300ER(Extended Range) have a 3-3-3 seat configuration on the Economy Class. Some airlines are less generous to their Economy Class passenger, having a 3-4-3 seat configuration on their Boeing 777 aircraft for the long haul flight. To name a few, they are Scoot, Air France and KLM.
This seat design can be found on their SQ Boeing 777-300ER & A380. The seat configuration on A380 are 3-4-3 on the lower deck and 2-4-2 on the upper deck since it has a wider body. SQ is currently refitting their Boeing 777-300ER with the latest generation cabin product. In the meanwhile, you would still see this seat design on most of their Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. This seat design is meant for long haul flight, it is still much preferred than those on the other aircraft type.
Row 31 is the first row of the Economy Class. Seats along the side of the Emergency Exits are preferred seats that come with extra legroom. They are being sold at additional price or offered to SQ high status frequent flyer. To be exact, they are 31(B,C,H,J) and 41(B,C,H,J). A & K are not considered as preferred seat because the door structure and the pocket for the magazine holds up a bit of space. However, it is still more comfortable for the legs than being in between the rows. If the flight is full, I would recommend to request for 31A/K & 41A/K since they are free and more comfortable. The legroom in between the rows are decent and slightly more spacious than some other airlines.
Before The Meal Service
As usual, everyone is given a steamy fresh towel before the flight commence. While every airlines are always on cost cutting, not many airlines provide this service on Economy Class.
For a small indulge, they started off with a drink service while heating up the dinner at their galley. This drink on the table was the Singapore Sling (cocktail). The in-flight entertainment system on their Boeing 777-300ER is quite amazing. It is a 10.6 Inch touch screen display. They have movies that were on cinema 3-4 months back. Currently on their September 2014 flight, they already have the recent famous ones like Maleficent, The Fault In Our Stars and Obsessed. One thing I was surprised that they even have the seat-to-seat call. This is something new to me, but I guess not many use it.
Meal Service- Lunch
Appetizer: Smoked Salmon with Potato Salad
The creamy potato salad is a mixture of mash and firm potato with dill dressing. It was an appetizing start together with the smoked salmon. Main Course: Gaeng Phed Pla Seafood meal is always a risky choice on the flight as it can be easy overcooked or tasteless. However, this Red Thai curry fish was exceptional. It was quite impressive that the LSG German caterer managed to cook this Asian dish well. The aromatic mild spicy red curry came with the right thickness and amount, which was a well complement with the fillet and rice. The ladies finger was nicely cooked too. There were 3 choices for the Main Course. Other airlines usually offer 2 choices for Economy Class passenger. From the Bakery: The German Laugenbroetchen was crispy on the outer layer. It was steamy warm when cut into half. I have flown out from Munich Airport with Lufthansa and Qatar Airways before. None of the roll was a traditional German one. It was the usual soft bun typically served on many airlines. Cheese is typically served in First and Business Class on other airlines. However, the lunch on SQ Economy class came with the cheese and cracker too, but in the economical way. The Movenpick Ice Cream was definitely a perfect finale.
After the meal service, there was another round of drink service. At Singapore Airlines, there is a spectrum of beverage choices, unlike many other airlines where there is a very limited selection of alcoholic drinks for economy class.
Economy Class Lunch and Beverage Menu:
Amenities
The Economy Class amenities on Singapore Airlines are designed by Givenchy, including the blanket and pillow case. Which other airlines even bother to pay such details to their Economy Class passenger? Additionally, the pillow was big and thick. The pillows on many other airlines are typically small and thin in the Economy Class, which I find it uncomfortable to put behind my back or rest my head on.
In the amenity pouch, there is only a pair of socks, a toothbrush and a toothpaste. Eye shades and ear plugs are given upon request.
Amenities in the lavatory:
Light Bites Along The Way
Even the light bites was so appealing and looked delicious. In the tray, there were Paprika Potato Chips, Cheese and Ham sandwiches, Cheese Cake and Giotto Vanilla balls. During my flight from Munich to Doha on Qatar Airways two years ago, I requested for some snack as I was quite hungry after a short nap. The crew only gave me two small packets of biscuit that only had 2 pieces inside. How pathetic. I wonder why they won the World Best Airline award by Skytrax in 2011 and 2012.
During the flight if you are tired, you can walk around the cabin and get a snack or a cup of drink from the galley. Just before the Lavatory, there is also a water dispenser.
Meal Service- Breakfast
At about 2-3 hours before landing, the crew commenced the last meal service. The breakfast with the Asian fried rice as the main course was a light and simple one. The English breakfast was looking more delicious. On the previous flight from Munich, poached eggs were even offered for breakfast.
Singapore Airlines Flight Timetable: SIN-MUC-MAN
Munich is a transit stop between the flight from Singapore and Manchester. Beside the long haul flight to Europe and America, Singapore Airlines also operates Boeing 777-300ER to some Asia destinations like Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai. If you choose a Boeing 777-300ER & A380 flight, you will be flying on the same seat product as shown in this post. Do take note that some Boeing 777-300ER have already been fitted with the newest generation of cabin product.

Hello and thank you for this well written and well presented review. I especially appreciate the photo of your seat in Row 31. I have booked a flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong for Nov. 2015 and have reserved seats 31H and 31J. From SeatGuru.com I see that there are two version of SQ's Boeing 777-300ER, the 773 and the 77W. The 773 has a lavatory in front or Row 31 and the 77W does not. As you can see this makes a big difference as having a lavatory at Row 31 would create a lot more foot traffic and people standing/waiting in that area. Can you tell me if the flight you reviewed above had a lavatory in front of Row 31 and if so did you find it bothersome? Thank you!

I flew in from Amsterdam on 25/6/2015 and was served hindu vegetarian meal as requested. However the meal was badly prepared an insufficient in quantiy. They also served breakfast which had the same black mush and a scoop of (uppuma). Being hungry I consumed it and ended with diarrhoea. I suffered from a painful stomach and loose motion the whole day. It only stopped after taking medication on that day and the following day. This is the worst meal I have ever had. Having flown on Sia several times the meals are usually OK although it is nothing to shout about. Please look into providing the service that you talk about. Thank You

A great review. I'm making this flight in December, from Manchester through. I wonder, do you know if we have to de-plane at Munich for the stop? Either on the way out or the way back? I've read conflicting reports on the procedures for this.

I have another question, do you know if the headphone plug on this plane is the traditional 2-prong type? I prefer to use my own earphones and so I will be bringing an adapter, but I'd like to know what type this plane uses. Thanks!

The 3 pin plug accommodates noise cancelling headphones. The extra pin is the power for the noise cancelling.

I completed my trip this past November and the flight/seat/plane, was exactly as described on this blog. Thanks again for the great review. There are some issues or warnings with selecting an exit row seat. Despite the abundance of leg room, you will not have a foot rest in front of you, since there is no seat in front of you. Also, there is nowhere to put your things other than in the overhead bin.
