I have been to Germany for a couple of times, and Berlin is the only German city that surprised me the most. Just a few metro stations ride, I saw two different sides of Berlin. They were like the South and North Korea, one is beautiful and modernized, one is dull and outmoded. While you may think that accommodation in Europe is expensive, you will be surprised if you make a quick browse through at agoda.com. The price is actually similar to Bangkok.
Click into this post for a quick exploration of the capital city of Germany. GENDARMENMARKT
During the first 2 nights, we booked the Executive room at the Hilton Hotel Berlin*. Our room was directly facing the cathedral in Gendarmenmarkt. It was a little creepy yet interesting to have the statue standing at the roof, looking into our room at night. Nevertheless, it was worth spending a little more for this great view, with the Berlin tower glowing at night on the far left.
I will be posting a review on Hilton Hotel Berlin* soon. The Gendarmenmarkt is a square in Berlin, which housed the "Konzerthaus" - concert hall at the center. At the side of the concert hall , the buildings with the statues on top are the French and German Cathedrals. CHECKPOINT CHARLIE
Checkpoint Charlie is the most famous checkpoint between the East and West Berlin when the border walls were erected in 1961.
BERLIN WALL ALONG THE CITY FERRY SERVICE FOR THE WEST GERMAN
EAST SIDE GALLERY
"My god, help me to survive with this deadly love".
The East Side Gallery is a 1.3km long section of the Berlin Wall along the river. TRABI- THE TRASHY CAR
Being the first vehicle produced by and sold to the East German, which were popular for years, they realized how trashy it was when the border was opened up.
HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL - MEMORIAL TO THE MURDERED JEWS OF EUROPE BRANDENBURG GATE
Built in the 18th-century as a sign of peace, it was often a site of major historical events.
REICHSTAG BUILDING
"DEM DEUTSCHEN VOLKE" - "To the German people". This is the parliament house built in 1894. The glass dome at the rooftop provides 360 degree view of the Berlin landscape. Prior registration to visit the glass dome is required.
MUSEUM ISLAND
The Berlin Cathedral
The museum island is located along the Spree river at the central district of Berlin, which housed 5 different museum.
UNIVERSITY LIBRARY OF HUMBOLDT
This is the best reading gallery I have ever seen, located in the University Library of Humboldt. We actually requested permission from the security to take a quick look. This is the best I could go for a picture, standing behind the glass.
BERLIN TEMPELHOF AIRPORT
The last operation of this regional airport was in 2008. It has now turned into a park open free for the public. Standing at 09L of the runway, we could still see an aircraft parking beside the terminal.
ALONG THE STREETS OF BERLIN
The pink pipelines hanging shamelessly along the streets in Berlin provide a beautiful contrast against the historical buildings. They are actually for construction at god knows where.
Some areas, which were formerly belonged to the East Berlin, look like West Berlin. When the walls were brought down, areas near the West Berlin were quickly modernized. Certain areas near the Alexanderplatz still reserved the old East Berlin look. ALEXANDERPLATZ
After 2 days staying around the more modernized area, I was very shocked when I first reached Alexanderplatz and the areas nearby. It is flooded with tall and dull looking flats in pale brown and grey. The streets were also filled with litters. I have never seen such dirty streets in Germany before.
CHARLOTTENBURG PALACE
This palace from the 17th century is the largest palace in the city. Behind the city is a large garden, probably 10 times larger than this palace.
BERLIN CITY WEST
For the last night, we shifted hotel to Waldorf Astoria Berlin, which were located at the heart of Berlin City West, a former territory of west Berlin . This was taken from the hotel's library, on the 17th floor of the hotel. The historical building directly in front is the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, which was badly damaged due to a bombing raid in 1943. When we were staying there, work was still carried out to probably maintain or recover some of its look.
This is the end of the visual journey in Berlin, hopefully you have a better idea of this city. Do free feel to drop any comments or questions if you are planning a trip there. All pictures are taken by me and my friend, unless stated otherwise. In the upcoming posts, I will soon be writing hotel reviews on Hilton Hotel Berlin and Waldorf Astoria Berlin. Do continue to follow my blog and I will show you how amazing Waldorf Astoria is. I even feel that we have underpay the hotel!
